For 139 years, The Saffrons has been a cornerstone of Eastbourne’s sporting heritage. But in recent years, the multi-sports club faced a financial crisis, struggling to sustain itself through traditional team sports alone. Now, thanks to the introduction of padel, The Saffrons is experiencing a remarkable revival.

This January, we opened four new padel courts—three canopied and one open-air— breathing new life into the Saffrons club. Once seen as an exclusive members-only facility, The Saffrons is now an inclusive community hub, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels.

Five years ago, an emergency meeting was held to discuss the club’s future. Costs were rising, and the club’s facilities were underutilised. “Other than evenings and weekends, there was nothing going on,” admitted club chairman Roger Myall. Recognising padel’s accessibility and growing popularity, the committee developed a new business model centered around the sport.

Partnering with Padel4all, The Saffrons has seen an immediate impact. Increased foot traffic has boosted the club’s newly improved cafe, and plans are already underway to expand hospitality offerings, including a tap room in collaboration with a local brewery.

More than just a financial lifeline, padel has redefined The Saffrons as a true community asset. Families now visit together, with parents playing padel, children engaging in football or hockey, and grandparents enjoying bowls or croquet. The club’s transformation also opens doors for national funding opportunities, ensuring its sustainability for generations to come.

“Padel puts us on the map,” said Roger Myall. “It changes perceptions, attracts new people, and secures our future.”

With its newfound vibrancy, The Saffrons proves that innovation and adaptability can save even the most historic institutions.  We are proud of our latest centre and all that it will bring to the local community.
